FAQ > What is bail?

Bail is an amount of money, which varies based on the crime you’re accused of, that you can pay to the court to allow a temporary release from jail while you are waiting for your trial. The bail money will be returned to you once you show up for your trial. The purpose of the bail money is to ensure you come back to face your charges. If you do not appear at your trial, you lose what you put up as bail (and you’ll be arrested and denied bond, so this is a very poor choice to make).
